Update: we found a space. We're furiously doing all the things. So this is a short post. 

And I recently went to a the People's LES talk, which made me very conflicted about the fact that we are essentially starting a gallery in the LES. Not that we shouldn't, but there is a lot to be aware of and I hope we can help sustain/create/connect here and not be seen as outsiders coming in and doing silly things. We want to help everyone be more creative, and need to pay the rent. 

So, lots of thoughts in my mind! More soon. 

Essex Street Market Community Workshop

In early February I attended the Essex Street Market Community Workshop. It was the first community event I’ve been to in my new neighborhood and was pertaining to the Essex Street Market that is being moved due to a new development in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

Essex Street Market is an active, diverse place with various vendors and food stalls. It is clearly beloved by the community and New York City at large. I had been to the market multiple times, even though we had literally just moved in. I was really happy to find a market super close to our apartment, and even happier to find such a warm, eclectic market, with a variety of foods, vendors, and cultures.

The market is publicly owned and managed by the New York City Economic Development Corporation and has gone through various changes since it started in 1940. Later this year it will be moving across the street as part of the Essex Crossing development. The market seems to be facing a common dilemma in many urban developments: how to create a warm, inviting space for the familiar and beloved market when they’ve already designed a stark, cold, glass, and steel structure to put it in.

I found a flyer for the workshop on the door of the Essex Street Market. The purpose of the workshop was to come up with programming ideas for when the market relocates.

As a newcomer, I attended the workshop more to get to know others in the neighborhood and what they care about. I was also curious who was running the workshop and what would happen afterward with the material learned from the community.

Overall it was a worthwhile event. It was attended by about fifty people from the neighborhood and of a variety of ages and races. We were separated into different groups with topics like ‘family events’ and ‘educational programming’ and led through some questions to brainstorm ideas of what programming the market could have.

Health was not a focus of the workshops, but many people in my group brought up health issues and ways to promote health and sustainability through the market programming and the way the market is run. Gentrification and equity were not called out by name, but we did discuss pricing and fundraising for the programming as most attendees wanted to keep it accessible to various levels of incomes.

It was unclear what kind of budgets were available for the programming, which made it less fun to come up with ideas because it seemed like the programs would probably end up being expensive and only accessible to middle or higher income individuals. It would have been helpful if we had an idea of what funds were available to come up with more realistic ideas.

I meet some neighbors and had an enjoyable time listening to what my new community loves about the Essex Street Market and hopes to see in the location.

Some things that I think could have made the workshop better:

• Introduce the decision makers on the development. I may have missed something, but I don’t think any decision makers on the actual development project were introduced or mentioned at the workshop. I sensed someone was there, but it was more of a looming presence than an actual presence. The workshop seemed to be led by the Lower East Side Partnership, but I highly doubt they will be making the final decisions on the market design or programming, unless they are also funding it. Who’s paying for this? Where are they?
• Have childcare available. Every time I go to a workshop like this, I think, if I were a parent there is no way I’d have time to be here, especially if I were a single parent. Having childcare not only provides a service that will enable more community members to attend, but will also signify that the market is committed to being family-friendly.
• Lead introductions within the small group. I introduced myself to the people next to me and it seemed like most people at my table did the same, but for those participants that aren’t as outgoing, give them an opportunity to introduce themselves in a safe environment. Going around the table and sharing one’s name and what brings them to the workshop is a very easy way to break the ice.
• Listen more than you talk. Facilitators should be guiding the discussion, not the main person in it.
• Have someone taking notes. This can be an attendee, but make sure it is clear that what is being shared is being recorded. Ideally, this is visual so the entire group can see and it can be photographed and shared with the decision makers later. A post-it self-stick pad can be propped up on an easel and a large, thick, black marker can be used to make sure everyone can see the notes.
• Give clear instructions. We all had post-its and a pen at our seat, but it wasn’t clear what to do with them. The series of questions we were asked started getting redundant toward the end, and also didn’t seem to match the giant white paper with questions on our table.
• Use thick markers. The pens were also very faint, so once we wrote on the post-its, it was hard to read from far away. Again, having thick markers will enable everyone to see what’s written on the post-its. Also, try having individuals put up their post-its and share what they written to have more participation and explanation from the attendees themselves. You can use a wall to put the sticker up and keep them there for the duration of the workshop.
• Summarize, but don’t repeat. Towards the end of the workshop, the facilitator started sounding like a broken record. Having visuals will help a facilitator to review the key terms or themes in a more natural way, and the facilitator can even have an attendee do it!
• Reveal what happens next. When you have an invested group of community members in  a room, who just spent an hour and a half of their weekday evening giving you their ideas and hopes for their community market, you must give them some insight into what will happen next. Will someone be giving a presentation to the developers and designers on the project? Will an email be sent? Will there be a follow up workshop? Will all of our ideas just be thrown away and forgotten? Ideally, the workshop will be documented, via photographs and words, and an accurate summary of the learnings from the workshop will be presented to the key decision makers on the project. I left feeling like this might not actually happen. Even just saying ‘we’ll be sending out a newsletter with a summary of this workshop’ would have made me feel like my time was well spent.

• If possible, have some wine. This will probably not work for every workshop, but some folks might open up if they have a glass of wine or a beer in hand.

On Tuesday I came home and found these gorgeous purple flowers on top of my boyfriend's bike. It was a nice surprise and later this week my and Jeremy went to Da Hing flower shop and got some plants to decorate our new apartment.

I started an embroidery class this week at the Textile Arts Center.  I also started a writing prompt exercise with my boyfriend.

Mini Walking Audit of the Blocks around my Neighborhood

For my ULI Health Leaders Network program, I had to perform a mini audit of the blocks around my neighborhood. I thought it would be interesting to share as my post for this week. I am using criteria from the Building Healthy Places Toolkit by ULI. 

I recently moved to the Lower East Side in Manhattan, New York City and performed a mini walking audit of the four blocks around my house. I may have gone more than a few blocks in some directions as the blocks in lower Manhattan are much smaller than upper Manhattan and it is easy to walk further than you may have intended.

The Lower East Side has a population of 80,855 people and is relatively diverse, being 20.3% White, 24.8% Hispanic, 8% Black, 43.8% Asian, and 3% mixed or other, according to the US Census. To the North is the East Village, to the West Little Italy and Chinatown, and to the Southwest is the Financial District. When walking around, there is a lovely mix of people from various ethnic, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds.

1. Incorporate a mix of land uses

I live in a coop unit with retail on the first floor. The surrounding blocks around my building also have retail on the first floor which creates a wide range of services and goods available in a very small radius from my home. Directly beneath my building is a ramen shop, a bike shop, a bar, and a psychic. The services in my building alone demonstrate the variety of retail that is available in my neighborhood and may encourage more activity at the street level than a neighborhood without first floor retail.

There are also schools, cultural institutions, small pocket parks, and the Williamsburg bridge in the surrounding blocks, enabling a true mix of land uses.

Recommendation:

While there is a good variety of land use and types of businesses, there are also quite a few vacant storefronts. One recommendation is to fill the vacant storefronts. In the few blocks around my building I came across a handful of vacant storefronts which created gaping holes in an otherwise fun walk around the block(s). Some had signs on them indicating that they were available to rent, but others just looked forgotten. I fear that the price of land and/or the size of the space, being rather large in some retail spaces, may prohibit new businesses from coming into the neighborhood. Until these empty retail spaces are filled and activated with buzzing businesses, the block will continue to feel a little bit empty.
 

2. Design well-connected street networks at the human scale.

3. Provide sidewalks and enticing pedestrian-oriented streetscapes.

There are some areas around my building where the streets are clearly marked and the streets are well-connected, and other areas where there isn’t a clear connection to another street or where vehicles dominate the street, making it hard to cross or gather.

Recommendation:

I recommend repainting existing sidewalks and street signage, and also creating more inviting areas for pedestrians to take a rest or gather on the street. In areas where it is feasible, I recommend actually widening the sidewalk to create more space for pedestrians. I also recommend filling the vacant retail so that there is more of a reason to walk streets that may be more void of retail options.

4. Provide infrastructure to support biking.

There is a bike trail that comes off the Williamsburg bridge and provides a great path through the neighborhood, however it is not well marked and the paint is fainting.

Recommendation:

I recommend repainting all the bike lanes and upgrading signage so it is more clear where a biker should go. I also recommend adding more bicycle parking and even bike storage to encourage more locals to use their bikes. For example, I live in a fourth floor walk up and have a bike. I would be more encouraged to use it if I had safe bike storage at the street level where I could keep my bike and also if there were more places where I could lock it if I am using it to run errands.

5. Design visible and enticing stairs to encourage everyday use.

6. Install stair prompts and signage.

There are not any outdoor or visible stairs in my neighborhood, but many of the buildings do not have elevators and thus force stair usage if one is to get above the first floor. There are a few retail spaces that are below grade and have a few steps to their basement space, but this actually deters potential customers and isn’t particularly helpful to one’s daily health.  

The benefits of this are that the neighborhood is easier to get around for those in wheelchairs because there aren’t any stairs.

7. Provide high-quality spaces for multi-generational play and recreation.

8. Build play spaces for children.

There are a few schools with playgrounds and basketball courts in the blocks around my building, but none look like they are open to the general public nor seem to encourage any multi-generational play or recreation.

Recommendation:

I recommend that the recreational spaces are opened up to the public when not in use by the schools and that there is also some public funding provided for multi-generational programming. Something like a shuffleboard court with some organized games could encourage this kind of physical activity and be accessible to people of various ages and socio-economic backgrounds.

9. Accommodate a grocery store

10. Host a farmers market

There is one bodega a few blocks from my house, but it doesn’t have a very large selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Fortunately, the Essex Street Market is only 4 blocks from my house and has a great selection of produce and other food items. I think there used to be a grocery store a few blocks from my house, but it now looks vacant.

Recommendation:

A farmers market including vendors from the Essex Street Market and local cafes and restaurants would be a great way to bring awareness to the existing food options and encourage some social gathering in the streets or buffer areas.

11. Promote healthy food retail

There are a few fast food options in the blocks near my house, including a $0.99 pizza slice spot and an empanada food truck. While I am not thrilled about the Burger King, the pizza spot and empanada stand are actually really great options for someone who is on a budget and needs a high fat food item to fill their stomach. These spots also add to lively street life because people are often lingering in the street waiting for their food or eating with friends.

Recommendation:

I recommend mandating that large fast food companies, like Burger King, include low cost, quality food options to their menus as well as find retailers that provide healthy options at an affordable price to fill the empty retail storefronts. This could even be done by setting up a shell space and facilitating a rotating pop-up of vendors to see what would be a good fit.

12. Support on-site gardening and farming

There is one pocket park a few blocks from my house, but it is just a collection of benches that face each other.

Recommendation:

Add a gardening plot so there is some greenery and something to do in this plot of land.

13. Enhance access to drinking water

There were no visible areas to get drinking water.

Recommendation:

Add drinking fountains and dog water fountains at every block.

14. Ban Smoking

As far as I know, smoking is not banned. However, I think this would be hard to enforce in public space.

15. Use materials and products that support healthy indoor air quality

16. Facilitate proper ventilation and airflow

17. Maximize indoor lighting quality

18. Minimize noise pollution

I could not tell from the walking audit if these things are in place in the buildings near my building, however I do know that my unit has double-paned windows and that has greatly lessened the noise we hear from the street. Implementing this in all buildings would definitely minimize noise pollution for tenants.

19. Increase access to nature

Because it is still winter, I am not sure how many trees are actually in the neighborhood, but it does seem like there are some!

Recommendation:

Plant more trees and add planters and other elements that could include greenery to the sidewalks and areas that have wide plaza spaces. Add trees and greenery to the pocket park and give a grant to retail spaces so they could add more greenery to their storefronts.

20. Facilitate social engagement

While there is a vibrant street life, it does seem like most people are going from point A to point B. Strangers do not seem to talk to each other, unless in a retail store or soliciting.

Recommendation:

Provide a fund for locals to use to organize their own social gatherings and use criteria that encourages intergenerational and diverse inclusion. Create more spaces where people can gather outside without having to purchase something.

21. Adopt pet-friendly policies

I am not sure how many buildings are pet friendly, but I did not see one area to let a dog relieve herself or get fresh water.

Recommendation:

Create an area where dogs could go to the bathroom and also drink fresh water. A mini dog park that is well maintained would be a great goal. It would also provide a space for dog owners to socialize and for those of us who do not have dogs to watch dogs play.

Lunchtime and retail exploring

Spending my days working from home can sometimes give me cabin fever, so I've been trying to go outside and explore my new neighborhood. It seems like a no brainer, but it's easy to get caught up in my work and not want to take breaks. Not good!

I've also been working on my new website for Distill Creative, and it has been going terribly. I am used to Squarespace and there's definitely a learning curve with Wordpress theme setup. So this will be a short post so I can get going on my website. 

Our neighborhood is perfect for wandering. We have beautiful streets with pedestrian paths, cheap food options, and inspiring retail.

Schedules, Keeping Track of Things, and Staying Sane

I love the idea of 'being present', but come on, when you have a lot of thoughts and ideas racing around in your head all the time, like me, it's really hard to be present and focus. It's also hard to be present when you have big goals for yourself and a million things in your head that you know you need to get to in order to make them happen. I've been obsessing about this because I am in a new city, with a new job running my own new business, a new boyfriend, and a new apartment that is still being set up. 

So in between taking down boxes, figuring out how to get from point A to point B on the subway, and why our hot water doesn't always work, I'm trying to figure out two things so I can be more present and sane: How to schedule my time and how to keep track of things.

Schedules + Scheduling

I am still figuring this out because I have client work, workshop development, content development, and personal projects that take up time in different ways and require different types of work spaces. I also want to spend time with friends and family and meet new people in this great big city. Here are some methods I am trying:

• iphone + agenda -- I'm a big believer in the digital - physical method of schedules. I keep everything up-to-date on my iphone and then once a week, usually on Sundays, I transcribe everything in my planner in big chunks. I record appointments and large projects. 

I'm using the Tropical agenda from UO, which I got at a museum in Barcelona. It's in Spanish so it is nice if you are practicing/learning Spanish. 

• Project planner -- I am using the Poketo Project Planner and loving it. I am honestly still figuring out how to make it work best for me without being overwhelming, but I do really like how it forces me to choose what I can realistically work on in a week. I'll probably have more on this later. 
• icalendar -- This goes back to my iphone-agenda method, but basically I use my calendar app on my iphone a lot, which syncs with my google calendar. Sometimes I over do it, scheduling in everything thing, but I am trying to instead block out more free time for myself, while still making sure I have a realistic amount of time for work, gym, family, friends, and everything else essential in my life. I also use the reminders calendar to remind myself of little things, like trimming my bangs. 
• Calendly -- I have been trying to use Calendly to book coffee dates. It works when my calendar is up-to-date. I feel strange using it for friends, but want to because it makes my life a lot easier. Still testing.
• Daily walks -- I'm still figuring this out, but my goal is to go walk a bit every day. My boyfriend does this and I'm always envious.  I realized I could do this, too. We're both working from home in the same tiny apartment right now, so it's pretty important I schedule this in to help me stay sane. 
• Gym time -- I joined the local gym, Ludlow Fitness, and it's been great. I schedule in the classes and gym time I want to have each week and stick to it. This helps me schedule everything else I need to do around it.

Keeping Track of Things

But first, some notes on blogging:

I've been thinking a lot about what blogging means these days -- what is it? why would someone do it when there are so many other ways to make and share content? what is the point? 

I've also been doing a lot of research regarding internet businesses and it's super overwhelming to see all the ways that people make money and share media on the internet, either as the main activity of their businesses or as a part of it. I'm thankful to live in a time of so much possibility, but I do kinda miss the time before hyper-media-explosion. 

In my own business, I am figuring out my content strategy. It will definitely include blogging, but not as much as it would if I had a bigger team or if I also didn't have to think about social media and all the other outlets. It's always been easy for me to think strategically for clients, and still is, but for some reason when running my own business it's harder to figure out a content strategy. It's like how you can give great advice to a friend, but can't give the same advice to yourself. 

So I'm going to start following my own advice. On my business blog, I'll follow my soon-to-be determined content strategy, which starts with moving my site from Squarespace to Wordpress. More on that soon! On my personal blog, which is here, I will share updates on my life. 

Why? Because every once in a while I look back on my old blogs from when I lived in Spain, started out in San Francisco, and my early days in DC. I wish I had been more consistent with those personal blogs because they are super meaningful to me now and help me remember things I did, things I loved, and who I was. 

I also realized that blogging is a key part of how I keep myself sane and organized.  I take lots of photos and want to remember places, locations, and feelings. I share these on social media, but something about blogging feels more permanent (I know, silly, because it's the internet, but also not silly, because it is the internet). On my blog I have total control of what is shown, and I'm not at the mercy of some algorithm deciding whether or not my content is shown. I don't expect anyone to read this, but if you are reading, awesome! Welcome to my mind!

How I keep track of my daily life: 

• My agenda. I keep a handwritten old school agenda and look at it pretty much every day. I also use a project planner to keep track of work and art projects. See notes above.
• A journal. I write thoughts every morning, kinda like the morning pages concept from The Artist's Way. 
• This blog. I'll post updates weekly about my week and any thoughts on my mind. 
• iphoto on my phone -- when I take photos of something I want to remember or write about later, I'll add them to shared folders I've set up so I can add comments to them. You can't add comments to a normal photo, which is really frustrating. I also will export the photos I want to use on my blog and resize them so they are ready to put in blog posts. 
• notes on my phone -- I've tried so many other apps, but really the notes app on my phone is the best. It opens quickly and I can search for terms when I am trying to find or remember something I know I recorded. 
• notes in a notebook -- I try to always have a notebook on me so that I can write handwritten notes as I often need to physically write things down to get them out of my head. I'm trying to make a habit out of taking photos of my notes so I can find them later, instead of trying to move the same notebook around in my bags and purses. 

Testing: 

• taking photos with my dslr + film camera -- I want to start taking photos again. I use my dslr to take photos for photo shoots, so there's that, but I want to start taking it out on walks. I also just got a film camera I want to learn how to use. We'll see how this goes.

Paying for Storage

It's annoying, but I realized I really needed to do this to make my life easier. 

• Paying for more icloud storage -- I just need to take photos and have them available in a way that connects to all my devices and that requires more storage. Once I stopped stressing about whether or not I should buy more storage and just made the decision to pay for more storage, I felt a lot better and now I am not constantly having to delete things to take new photos. I am trying to delete photos I don't need more often, like the blurry ones. 
• Dropbox + Google Drive storage -- ditto. I have files, they are often big. I need to put them somewhere. 
• Blog hosting -- I'm using Squarespace for now. But, I don't love it for blogging.

Staying Sane

I was going to write that the journalling is a therapeutic activity, but really everything in this post is therapeutic for me. When I don't have a schedule or I don't know how to keep track of things, I start to lose it.

I've realized it is especially important for me in a time of transition to figure out these very simple things: scheduling and keeping track of things.  In my line of work I need photos and records, especially because my work is very visual. I often need to recall an artist, a retail storefront, a restaurant, a recipe, and I need to be able to find the records of these things to guide my approach to research, create content, or give guidance. 

I am also the kind of person that needs to write things down to get them out of my head, and I know I feel better when I use these methods to do so. Am I neurotic? Maybe, but that's ok.
